Risky Behaviors

Background

This assignment will introduce your students to the identified risk factors of chronic disease. Students will be able to describe the variety of behaviors and conditions that increase a person's risk of developing certain chronic diseases. With the help of online resources students will have an opportunity to use analytical skills to decipher statistics on disease-related risk factors. Students will have an opportunity to visit with a nutritionist to understand how diet impacts our health.

Suggestion for Classroom Visitors

Invite a nutritionist to discuss the relationship between food and chronic disease.

Research Task

Using interview notes and the publication "The Burden of Chronic Disease and Their Risk Factors", students should write a 2-page paper comparing the impact of chronic disease and the risk factors in any two states.

In their paper students should include:

1. A brief summary of what they have learned about risk factors
2. A few common behavior changes people can make to reduce their risk
3. The differences and similarities of risk factors found in two different states
