Health Quest: Walking and Biking to School

Health Quest: Walking and Biking to school is an interactive research project designed to teach you about the health, environmental, and safety issues involved in walking and biking to school.  This unit is designed around research, information gathering, and presentation using a problem based action research design to arrive at an Action Plan for your school.

In Learning Tasks 1 and 2, you will conduct research and then put on an in-class colloquium, at which time you will present your research findings.  Those in the audience will take notes on the key points/learnings from each of the other group's research.  You will then write up your own summary and Action Plan.  In Learning Task 3 you will collect data and then present your findings to your classmate.  In the Final Activity, your class will use the research from each Learning Task to arrive at an Action Plan for your school.  You will then present the Action Plan to a school assembly, your School Board, Town Select Board or other group.

Unit Outcome

At the end of this unit, you will be able to discuss the health and safety of walking and bicycling to school in the U.S., Vermont, and in your community, and develop an Action Plan for walking and biking to your school, which you will present to school or town leaders.
